Cheltenham Gold Cup - Key Races
King George VI Chase
The stand out race with relevance to the Gold Cup is by and away the King George at Kempton.
Seven of the last ten winners of the Gold Cup had also run in the King George with on four occasions horses winning both races (Best Mate, Kicking King and Kauto Star twice).

Gold Cup Form Trends
All of the last ten winners were aged between seven and nine
This trend highlights that the Gold Cup tends to go the way of the young up and coming horses and those horses at the top of their sport. Horses aged ten and over tend to struggle as, inevitably, they are starting to lose some of their speed and stamina. This should theoretically count against the soon to be ten year old Kauto Star but who is the danger to the title holder? Threats look hard to find at this stage so perhaps Kauto can upset another trend?
Gold Cup Form Tips
Paul Nicholls has won the last three Gold Cups and filled most of the places in that time as well so perhaps if his Kauto Star does not win the Cheltenham main event another Ditcheat inmate will lift his crown? Denman's victory in 2008 was one of the all-time great Gold Cups but questions must be raised as to if he will ever match that sort of performance again and Neptune Collonges is on the sidelines with injury so watch out for a new wave of Nicholls' contenders for top honours. But what will they be?
