Stamina is obviously the key here but the question is how to ascertain if your selection is likely to stay this marathon trip at what is likely to be an early stage of a steeplechase career?


As well as the trends outlined above, horses that have had form over three miles and further over hurdles tend to translate that stamina from the smaller obstacles to this extreme over fences.


Also, look out for a high stamina index in the sire of your selection. For example, last year's winner Tricky Trickster was sired by Oscar who has an index of 15.2f. The higher this figure is the greater the influence of stamina. Look for sires around the 12/13f or above figure.

Alan King won this race two years ago with Old Benny and and while the form of Pennek may look a shade disappointing for a horse who was placed in last year's Pertemps Hurdle Final, King has stated the tracks he has had to run his charge over on his last two starts have not played to the horses strengths.
Stamina is undoubtedly this horses strongpoint and he will get every opportunity to use that quality in this race and as the King string invariably hit form the Festival it could be that this horse is way over-priced at the currently available 33/1.

Pennek looks well worth an each-way bet to upset the market leaders who make little appeal.
