Arkle Tips and Odds

Grade One Chase for Novices over 2 miles of the Old Course 14.05 Tuesday March 16th 2010.

Arkle Trends

The Arkle is a huge test for inexperienced horses who are required to jump well at speed. Errors will cause horses to struggle to keep in touch and those unable to maintain a high cruising speed will become too far detached. The fastest horse both over and between the fences will come out on top.

21 of the last 23 winners finished first or second last time out

All out of the last ten winners started at an SP no bigger than 11/1

All of the last ten winners had had no more than five races over fences

Nine of the last ten winners were aged between five and seven (only one winner aged eight or over since 1960!)

Nine out of the last ten winners were rated at least 142 over hurdles

Arkle Winners

We are on the look out for a future star of sprint chasing. Recent Arkle winners Voy Per Ustedes, Moscow Flyer, Azertyuiop, Flagship Uberalles and Klairon Davis have all gone on to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Arkle Tips

We got things off to a great start in this race last year Cheltenham Tips tipping Forpadydeplasterer at 8/1.

The last of our trends listed above looks a great place to start when looking for an ante-post wager on the Arkle. Not that many horses rated 142 or over will go over fences and if they meet the age requirement they could well be worth considering.

The problem then is trying to decipher which of the Novice Chases your ante-post pick will be aimed at as novices will often receive a quote for this race and the RSA Chase.

Don't be afraid to go against the so called experts who may suggest your selection is likely to go for a different race - if you can get a decent price it might be worth taking a chance on as the last three winners of this race - My Way De Solzen, Tidal Bay and Forpadydeplasterer - all looked more likely to go for the longer race at least at one point in their Arkle winning season.

In light of the above, Long Run would be the selection if he were to race here instead of the RSA but, at the time of writing, that looks doubtful.

In Long Run's absence, our tip for the Arkle is Somersby.

Henrietta Knight has not won this race before but always targets a good horse at the race and Sommersby could be the horse to break the hoodoo. Rated 143 over hurdles, primarily due his third in last season's Supreme Novices Hurdle, he has won both his starts over fences and looks a horse full of promise.
With both Captain Cee Bee and Sizing Europe looking too old for this race Somersby could be the horse to bring Knight back into the Cheltenham spotlight.
