Kim Muir Trends Analysis

Trainers that have a good record in this race are Nicky Henderson (three winners since 1990), Ferdy Murphy (wins in 1996 and 2006) and Donald McCain (wins in 2007 and 2010). David Pipe recorded first and second in this race in 2011 (and second in 2010) but Martin Pipe also won this race three times between 1991 and 2004 so Pond House certainly know what is required to win the Kim Muir.

This race tends to go to a handicap chaser who has learnt enough to keep his amateur pilot out of trouble but hasn't got to the point where his handicap mark has become overexposed.

Horses who have had between five and eleven chase outings have won the last seven renewals of this race and a pattern could be emerging.

Kim Muir Preview

The Kim Muir seems to becoming the Grand National stepping stone with 2010 winner Balllabriggs going on to Aintree glory and the 2012 winner Sunnyhillboy losing out in the National by a whisker.

Donald McCain could have another Grand National prospect on his hands with the bold jumping Super Duty who finished second in this race last year.

Looking out for a horse with the potential to go on to bigger things appears to be the way to go in this race.

Kim Muir Tips

CAUSE OF CAUSES has yet to hit the heights over fences that he achieved over hurdles but it looks likely that winning a big pot over the bigger obstacles is just a matter of time.

Rated as high as 152 over hurdles, CAUSE OF CAUSES failed to show any spark on his first five races over fences and plunged to a rating of just 129. Something then seemed to click with the horse and he has finally begun to show his true form.

In his last two runs he has finished second, beaten a nose, in a 26k handicap at Fairyhouse and then another agonising defeat by just a short head in the 86k Paddy Power handicap at Leopardstown.

Connections must feel they are due a big win after coming so frustratingly close in their last two races and CAUSE OF CAUSES's new mark of 140 still looks very workable considering he has been 12lb higher over hurdles.

Gordon Elliott has given this horse multiple entries at the Cheltenham Festival but the betting appears to be indicating that the Kim Muir will be his target. Nina Carberry has an impressive strike rate for the stable and there must be every chance that she will be booked to ride this horse.

The Kim Muir appears to give CAUSE OF CAUSES a great chance of breaking his duck over fences and the stage looks set for his owner JP McManus to instigate one of his famous Cheltenham Festival gambles.
