Triumph Hurdle

The JCB Triumph Hurdle is for four year old novices only and raced over 2m1f of the New Course.

A large field and a very fast pace will test these youngsters. Some experience over hurdles and a proven ability to win, preferably in a good class race, is what we are looking for.

We nailed this race in 2011 with Zarkandar landing a confident 7/1 tip and went close again in 2012 when Hisaabaat was second at 20/1.

Triumph Hurdle Analysis

The introduction of the Fred Winter Juvenile Hurdle has been a boon for Triumph Hurdle punters as the prices of seven out of the eight winners of the Triumph since that race was introduced into the Festival have been 9/1, 7/2, 11/2, 5/1, 11/2, 6/1, 13/2 and 4/1.

In 2009, 2010 and 2011 the first three horses in the betting filled three of the first four places home and in 2008 the first and second favourites filled the top two places.

Great rivals Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls have taken four of the last seven runnings of the Triumph between them but Alan King may be the main trainer to follow in this race with two wins, two seconds and a third since 2005.

Triumph Hurdle Tips

At a recent preview evening Paul Nicholls said he was worried if Calipto would have enough speed to deal with horses that had previously run on the flat and he could well be right as nine out of the last ten winners of the Triumph Hurdle had all run on the flat before turning to hurdles.

If Nicholls is right then a number of the fancied runners could struggle with Calipto, Le Rocher, Activial, Tiger Roll and Gitane Du Berlais all beginning their careers under National Hunt rules.

One horse who does fit the bill is John Ferguson’s BROUGHTON. A tough handicapper on the flat for Mark Johnston, this son of Teofilo ran in the hustle and bustle of a big handicap at Royal Ascot so the occasion and a big field should not be a problem for him in the Triumph Hurdle.

BROUGHTON has run well in both of his runs over hurdles and was extremely impressive when winning at Musselburgh on soft ground. This horse has form on all grounds and with the quality of horse in his stable it must surely only be a matter of time before John Ferguson records a win at the Festival. This race would appear to be ideal for the type of horse Ferguson trains.

John Ferguson said this about his horse recently:
“He’s in extremely good form….and he’s got an outstanding chance. He’s streetwise, jumps well and stays well.”
